Nathan Helberg
Building mental resilience and moving with purpose
Learn MoreBuilding mental resilience and moving with purpose
Nathan Helberg
Nathan was unhappy with the way gym and weight training had made him dysfunctional through joint range. Although he was strong, it was only in set planes (ie. pushing in one range on bench press, or pulling in one range on seated rows). Outside those ranges he was quite weak, and even felt vulnerable to joint instability.
He identified through his experience (and echoed by others) that over prolonged periods traditional training can actually make you dysfunctional — your muscle groups and motor patterns impaired through constant isolation. After all, the body works as an integrated system not individual parts thrown together.
Nathan decided to develop a style of training that wouldn’t involve weights or machines — but strengthened his joints, ligaments and tendons through FULL ranges.
He also wanted to achieve a superior level of conditioning, so it needed to be a high intensity workout to burn fat and build lean muscle.
By increasing his anaerobic threshold, it also strengthened his aerobic and cardio system — effectively killing 2 birds with one stone and creating a time effective workout.
Over time as his joint mobility increased, so did ZUU’s dynamic movements. This not only dramatically improved his overall strength, but more importantly — made it far more functional.
At the same time, by dropping body fat he gained a power to weight ratio he hadn’t experienced in his earlier training.

Captain Peter Hammarstedt
Swedish-American Peter Hammarstedt, 35, is the Director of Campaigns for Sea Shepherd Global, sits on the Board of Sea Shepherd Global and is Chairman of Sea Shepherd Australia. He is captain of the ocean-going vessel Bob Barker, having spent more than 17 years at-sea including 10 years in Antarctica.
In 2014/15, the Bob Barker, with Peter as captain, set the world record for the longest pursuit of a poaching vessel at sea after chasing the Interpol-wanted fishing vessel Thunder for 110 days—covering three oceans and 11,000 nautical miles—before its captain intentionally sank his own vessel in a bid to destroy evidence.
Since then, Peter, has provided civilian offshore patrol vessels (COPVs), under so-called ‘ship rider’ agreements, to many African coastal states in order to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. On-going partnerships between Sea Shepherd and the law enforcement agents of African coastal and island States have resulted in the arrest of 52 vessels for illegal fishing and other fisheries crimes over the past four years.
The COPVs have served as critical platforms for capacity-building of law enforcement agencies in increasing monitoring, control and surveillance capabilities in the maritime domain. Thus, in 2018 Peter was nominated for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award, given to a person under the age of 40 with an innovative solution to addressing an environmental concern.
Peter is also the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Winsome Constance Kindness Gold Medal for Humanitarian Service, previously awarded to Dr. T. This summit is for you if:

Why this is so urgent

Toxins
The American Chemical Society has registered 150 million substances. Most have not been tested for their long-term health effects. We know substances in everyday products disrupt our hormones, cause cell damage and can even penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Did you know that scientists found hundreds of toxins in polar bear blood? There is no hiding from toxins so you need simple strategies to detox every day!

Stress
Our world has become more complex and is moving faster each day. As a result 70 to 80% report feeling overwhelmed. In fact, only 6% report not feeling stressed at work. This level of stress wreaks havoc on our health so we need new strategies to deal with stress (did you know that stress can lead to systemic inflammation which is one of the underlying drivers for all chronic disease?).

Resistant Bacteria
More than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year. Often this resistance is built in our food supply chains. There are measures to minimize your risk and most importantly: you need a healthy body that can defend itself (did you know 70% of our immune system lives in our gut and that we can support that immune system with affordable foods?)

The Environment
The recent developments prove that we'll have to pay the debts for how we treat our planet sooner or later. But there are simple lifestyle choices that can help you thrive while minimizing your impact and exposure (did you know that according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 6 in 10 known infectious diseases are believed to have jumped from animals to humans?)

The New Smoking
On average Americans sit 10 hours a day. But our bodies are not designed to function well without movement. From our immune system to neuro-development to our mental well-being, sitting is so bad it's often termed the "new smoking". Luckily there are ways to remain fit and strong without having to spend hours in the gym (did you know that exercising can't make up for sitting all day?)
